Rødtinden (21.04.2013)  3

Start point Storelva
Characteristic Randonnée/Telemark
Distance 5.0km

My mum and brother were visiting Tromsø for a few days and I really wanted to get my brother out on a trip to experience the wonderful ski-life up here. Since he had downhill skiing experience (more than me) I was not so bothered about him getting down a mountain. But after a week of warm weather with rain showers, I wasn't convinced that snow conditions were so fun. In the end I decided Rødtind would be a good option to start off with since it is only a short trip and it would at least give us the option of taking another trip afterwards if my brother didn't find it too tiring.

After the rain had stopped we started around kl.14 from the road near the Kvaløya ski stadion and began the trip towards the lysløypa and then up through the forest. Turned out I was more or less right about the snow conditions. It felt wet and heavy to skin up, not really that tiring but I already sensed that the downhill skiing could be more difficult than when I had come here 2 weeks ago with Kamila. Daniel seemed to be doing well, keeping up with my pace of skinning up but after we reached about two thirds of the way up he started to mention he was tired. Fair enough. I didn't expect he would find it easy anyway since he is not used to climbing mountains, let alone on a pair of skis!

Fortunately he kept going until we got to the top, and I could tell he was quite pleased - especially with the views. It wasn't very sunny anymore, and pretty windy too but not cold. We didn't stay too long before getting ready to ski down. As expected, the downhill skiing proved to be not so enjoyable and it was difficult to make some decent turns, but we managed albeit in a longer time than usual. I did my best to convince Daniel that the snow wasn't always this unpleasant. Whether he believed it or not I do not know! I think he was glad to have done the trip though, and so was I.
