Great Gable
- Date:
- 23.12.2015
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:00h
Buttermere to Keswick
- Date:
- 24.10.2010
This has to be one of my more memorable days of walking in the autumn! After a previous day's soaking in the rain, we were totally inspired by the beautiful route we had planned from the Buttermere youth hostel. So excited about it that I even made the effort to get up specially at 4.00am just so we could be out the hostel and onto the route by 5.00am. That's dedication I can tell you. Anyway, when we left the youth hostel it was pretty chilly, but fortunately the sky was almost crystal clear. The hike up through Burtness wood and following Sour Milk Gill in the dark wasn't my fondest memories of the day, but since we'd been looking forward to seeing a sunrise from the top of Red Pike, it simply had to be done. Unfortunately though, all our efforts weren't rewarded with the amazing sunrise >>>
Wastwater to Honister
- Date:
- 03.07.2010
This was the second day of a 2-day backpacking route, the first of which took my sister and I from Langdale to Wasdale over some fine peaks. From the Wastwater youth hostel, where we stayed the night, we took the somewhat laborious trudge back up the road to get to the foot of Yewbarrow, the first fell of the day. Unluckily for me, I discovered my platypus had a leak in it and I had more drink absorbed into the padding on the back of my rucksack than I had left in the water reservoir itself. So it wasn't a particularly good start to the day, but I had the chance to try and fix things up before we got onto the ascent properly. So Yewbarrow was a new fell for me, and I was quite impressed with it. It's a lovely spur which takes you quite rapidly up the fell in a northesterly direction, and although >>>
Seathwaite circuit
- Date:
- 06.03.2010
With winter still in full swing in the Lakes, I was back up with a friend of mine from Loughborough. We had been staying at the Derwentwater youth hostel the previous night, so we had good access to the Borrowdale fells and beyond. In the end we decided on a route from Seatoller, which took in the ascent of Glaramara. It was a nice stony path to start off with, but by the time we neared the summit, shortly behind a party of lads, there was a good covering of snow. More traipsing through snow ensued to descend and walk along to Allen Crags, with great views over to Honister and the western fells. From Allen Crags we headed down in the direction of Esk Hause before bearing in a (north?)westerly direction towards Sprinkling tarn and Styhead tarn. From there we made one last ascent of the day to >>>
Great Gable
- Date:
- 04.01.2010
After a night spent in the Keswick youth hostel, we (myself and my friend Sue) headed down south a little to hike up Great Gable. We parked up in Seatoller and followed the road towards Seathwaite over the somewhat icy tracks. The lower level paths were also icy in the valley, and it was a bit tricky to start off with, but higher up it was more snow-covered terrain and quite OK to walk without the crampons. We didn't see many other people on the walk. And we didn't get much in the way of summit views because it had clouded over shortly before we got to the summit. Nevertheless, it was good to be out again after the previous day's hike at least in some nice hard snow too.
Ennerdale to Wasdale
- Date:
- 23.05.2009
There's not a lot to say about the weather on this day except that it started off in heavy rain with an unpleasant hike up rain-soaked grass to Steeple, where I got a bit lost so I have no idea how I got to Pillar. Somehow I had some luck in passing some other hikers who pointed me in the direction of Pillar so I followed their vague directions and found myself reassuringly up on its summit in yet more rain and with absolutely no views to speak of whatsoever. Nevertheless I carried on in the direction of the descent I thought I should be taking. Turns out it took me down the wrong side of the fell and back on to the Ennerdale side of Pillar, but at least when I got to this point it had stopped raining, the cloud had lifted and I could actually figure out where I was and where I needed to get >>>
Buttermere to Ennerdale
- Date:
- 22.05.2009
The weather on this day was a bit overcast, so it wasn't the most amazing day ever. Nevertheless, I did the usual hike up through the forest to get above Buttermere and onto the ridge to the top of Red Pike. Continued along the obvious line passing over the rock-strewn tops of High Crag and High Stile, then descended the somewhat steep and stony path to Scarth Gap before getting up onto Haystacks. Went as far as Blackbeck tarn and then descended in a southwest direction along a stream into Ennerdale, coming out quite close to Black Sail youth hostel. Very long and boring walk along Ennerdle in the rain to get t the youth hostel. The only consolation was that I had a whole 6-bed dormitory to myself :-) And had a good nights sleep.
