This was to be my first ever ski trip on fjellski! The lovely Kine Halse who was spending a few months at UNIS had very fortunately been able to borrow some telemark utstyr from a friend, which meant she offered to lend me her skis to use for a trip. More luckily was that her boots actually fitted me even though they were 2 sizes smaller than my usual boots! So on a crisp and sunny saturday morning, we drove up to Nybyen and parked up just at the end of the last barracks. We met here with one of Kine's friends, Karoline Kirsch and she joined us for the trip to Trollsteinen. It was a little windy here, as it always is, and I changed from my thin down jacket to my full-on Rab Summit down jacket. It was -12 in the valley, but felt so much colder with the wind chill, coupled with the fact I'd done no exercise for the whole morning, which is always a sure way to guarantee feeling colder than usual. Anyway, somehow I didn't get too hot with the jacket on and made quite good progress on the skis as we made our way up Larsbreen. Snow conditions were perfect and for once I experienced just how nice it is to not sink through the snow in hiking boots! Sunshine was with us all the way up the upper slopes of the mountain and with the exception of some patches of icy snow to make things a little more awkward, everything went rather swimmingly for a first ski trip and only when we reached the summit ridge did we tke off the skis to make the last hike to the top (it gets a bit too narrow and rocky to ski this part).
Great views all round toward Fardalen and out toward Nordenskiøld, Adventoppen and Hiortfjellet. I will never tire of the views on a trip in Svalbard! That was a truly memorable day, not least because I fell over 3 times on the way down before deciding it would be safer if I just took off the skis and walked down! We finished up the trip with dinner at Huset. A good burger, salad and coffee was simply awesome :-)
