Langdale

Datum:
09.11.2009

To start the day I had an absolutely beautiful drive from Grasmere to Langdale via the High Close road in crisp and cold conditions. Frost was accessorizing the strands of grass and a cool temperature inversion kept some low level mist nearly down to ground level. The walk itself was not exciting, but the views and sunny weather made it a very good day out, cut short only by the fact I had to be on the road ideally by 4 pm to make my way down to Aberystwyth so unfortunately I didn't complete the circuit by going all the way over to Esk Hause and onto the Langdale Pikes. After Bowfell it was a descent down to Ore Gap and then on to Angle Tarn, returning to Langdale via the steep steps down into Mickleden and along the valley bottom.

Scafell Pike with Mum

Datum:
29.08.2009

Bank holiday weekend was spent taking Mum on our annual trip to the Lakes together; this weekend was unfortunately not blessed with the most fantastic weather ever, and on the Saturday we drove to Seathwaite from Borrowdale youth hostel to join several other parties of walkers who were making the trudge up to the top of England's highest despite the miserable and dreary wet weather. Surprisingly my Mum, even though not a hiker - didn't complain once. Even I didn't find the walk up Grains Gill particularly inspiring with the lack of views, but we carried on anyway. By the time we'd passed Sprinkling Tarn and gotten up to Esk Hause the wind was blowing really rather strongly and I was cold enough to need to put on extra layers. Probably wearing more on the summer bank holiday weekend than I sometimes >>>

Wastwater to Langdale

I love this route to bits! Despite having had a rather miserable hike the previous day, this one was amazing. Great weather, and great views and greater company - which was more of an unintentional thing. Started off from the Wastwater YHA, made my way back up the tedious tarmac road to the northern end of Wastwater, and from there began the steady but popular route of ascent up Scafell Pike which runs along Lingmell Gill. Its pretty OK, nothing amazing though and it starts to flatten out after Hollow Stones. From there though its a somewhat loose climb up a gully to reach the col bewteen Scafell and Scafell Pike, but you're virtually at the top by the tim you get here. A nice gently slope up to the summit and here I was joined, as I expected by a lot of other hikers. All of us were happy faced >>>

Langdale to Scafell round

Bergtour

A classic all-time favourite of mine, done in perfect spring-like weather with crystal clear blue skies and warm enough to wear a t shirt without a jacket on top. I started the hike at 11am from Great Langdale, hoping to be 'late enough' on top of Scafell Pike to see a sunset without having to wait around on the top for too long. Bow Fell was busy with many people having lunch when I got there, enjoying the gorgeous views over Great Moss and the hazy layer of sunshine below the summits. It was nice to be in the company of other enthusiastic hikers and even though some people might prefer to have a mountain to themselves, I think a dozen other hillwalkers in good spirits is better than no one at all. From Bow Fell I took the usual descent northwards and across to Esk Pike, enjoying the views >>>

Coniston round

Datum:

University mountaineering club meet, staying at the hut opposite the Coppermines youth hostel. I opted for a hike by myself since being typical students, the rest of the club had had a late night on the alcohol and as a result were still in bed at 10am. So I took the route up Wetherlam and followed the natural line of the ridge round to Swirl How, and then toward the Old Man of Coniston. It made for a rough day out on the fells with low cloud, high wind and generally not much to see in the way of views. It was quite a relief to get back into the hut again afterwards!
