Grasmere to Swirls via Helvellyn

This was a rather straightforward but satisfyingly scenic route from Grasmere in a northerly direction. Since I had a bus to catch before midday, I left the youth hostel at about 7.30am, well on schedule, and made the route into a bit of a time trial by attempting to complete it in as fast a time as possible. It basically follows the A591 northwards for a while until the foot of the valley starts that leads up to Grisedale Tarn from the south (and not the valley going up here from Dunmail Raise). From Grisedale Tarn it was a bit of hard slog up Dollywagon Pike with a heavy rucksack to carry, but after that there is very little more ascent to make to pass over both Nethermost Pike and Helvellyn. Great views all to myself at the summit, since I arrived there at about 9.30am on a Monday morning >>>

First few days of acclimatisation in the Ishinca valley Wednesday, 5th July 2006: Huaraz – Pashpa – Ishinca base camp (4390m) The first part of our journey involved a bus journey from Huaraz to Pashpa. The roads weren’t great but we had many interesting sights along the way, passing some tree plantations and people working or walking along the roadside. They seemed to be very cheerful and friendly and gave us a wave or smiled as we drove past. After arriving in Pashpa and sorting out the mules, which were carrying some of our kit to the camp we began the trek at about 10am. It was pretty ok and grassy to walk on, but immensely hot. The views across to Huascaran and the surrounding peaks of Huandoy and Chopicalqui were unbeatable though and we took our time to fully appreciate the scenery >>>

Monday 8th August 2005: Leysin – Arolla – Dix Hut The ascent of Mont Blanc de Cheilon was the first peak of a week-long student mountaineering course. Unusually we were a group of five girls (we didn’t know each other before the course started) with a Swedish alpine guide named Dick. Our preparations for the week kicked off on the first day when the five of us – Lucy, Rosie, Gabie, Anna and me - went on a grocery shopping expedition in the local Coop in Leysin having been handed 200 swiss francs by Dick. Our basket was quickly filled up with cereal bars, chocolate, dried meat and fruits, cheese and bread and some fresh fruit for the journey over to Arolla. After the shopping efforts, we eventually drove out of Leysin and down the winding road into Aigle at the bottom of the valley. The >>>

Some very old pictures from a trip with the late guide Brede Arkless and Frances. Took the cable car up to the Klein Matterhorn station from Zermatt and went up Castor. Finished at the Quintino Sella hut. Not many memories of that hut, only that the coffee was awful (it tasted terrible at 3am anyway, maybe would have appreciated it more later in the day) and the hut breakfasts were not much better either.

Huayna Potosi

Sunday 6th July 2003 Huayna Potosi (6088m) was to be the first 'big' mountain of a 3-week trip in Bolivia, and we headed over here after a week of acclimatising in the Condoriri group. It was a mountain we'd viewed from pretty much every peak we'd climbed in the Condoriri and we had been very impressed by it. Once we'd hiked out of the Condoriri base camp, and arrived back in Tuni, we were picked up by jeep and driven straight to our first campsite on the Huayna Potosi near the Zongo dam, situated in a rather bleak and uninspiring mining area. Our first impressions weren't particularly positive, especially after sleeping on a campsite surrounded by beautiful peaks in the Condoriri but inside the refuge where we had a supper of soup, steak and vegetables, we listened to a bit of Sophie Ellis-Bextor >>>

Ascents in the Condoriri

The Condoriri group is a beautiful cluster of alpine-like mountains in the Cordillera Real mountains of Bolivia. Because they are on average, between about 5100-5600m, they were smaller than the two main objectives of our 3-week trip to Bolivia, which were Huayna Potosi and Illimani, both of which are more than 6000m in height. So, the Condoriri peaks were perfect to kick off our acclimatisation and we travelled here after some days relaxing and trekking around Copacabana and the Isla del Sol. To get to the Condoriri though, we had a jeep drive to Tuni at 4300m with our cook team, Domingo and his assistant Mario. Although the journey from Copacabana was approximately 4 hours long, the time seemed to pass very quickly, because we were so preoccupied with the amazing mountain scenery appearing >>>
