The hike up Blåtinden was a something of a multi-visit trip, since I had made an ascent of this mountain in the autumn of 2011 with my sister, and remember the views as being really good, especially when you get quite high on to the upper slopes of the mountain. Then, in January I also took a hike in the hope of seeing the sun make its return back to the Arctic, but the hike had taken me a very long time (we're talking like 2 hours here), just to get up and above the forests on the very lowest part of the mountain - simply because there had been such deep snow to hike through and at that point in the season had not discovered the possible benefits of snow shoes or skis......! This time however, I had plenty of daylight and was armed with snow shoes. When I parked at the foot of the mountain >>>

This was what I'd generally regard as a semi-spontaneous trip, because it was planned only the day before we went. There was a cloudless sky, lots of sunshine and plenty of fresh air - just what we needed after a day in the office! With only -3 or -4 at the bottom of the mountain by Kaldfjord, conditions seemed perfect for a hike. My friend Lene had not been out on a mountain since our last hike together to Stor Kjølen, and that was in the previous autumn so she was equally thrilled to be getting out once more in a different part of Tromsø.
Neither of us had much of a plan for route-finding, but we figured that since this was quite a popular choice of skiing destination, there should be some pretty obvious tracks we could follow all the way up. And that's what we did. It was almost too easy, >>>
Blåtinden (den Sovende Soldat)

A stable spell of weather during the week that my sister was visiting meant that we really had to get out onto another mountain and make the most of the beautiful sunshine and cloudless skies. Took the 45 minute drive down through Lavangsdalen to Skogvoll and parked up just close to the start of the footpath. Brilliant views out over Balsfjord all the way up through the forest and out onto the grass. Quite a lot of other hikers out on this nice day. Got stunning views out to the Lyngen Alps after getting onto the upper section of the mountain. Quite steep in places but no scrambling was needed, which was good because my sister didn't like too much exposure! Path was easy to follow, and the view to Andersdaltinden, Svartnestinden and Sultindan were very impressive too. Had a spot of lunch at >>>
Tromsdalstinden

My sister was visiting me from the UK during this week, so I thought Tromsdalstinden would be a nice mountain hike to introduce her to the wonderful landscape around Tromsø. We parked up in Tromsdalen and walked the few kilometers along the track until reaching the point where the path crossed over the river and onto the northern shoulder of the mountain. From here it was a lovely hike through some sparse woodland and then out onto the scrub above. Colours were immense - very autumnal and lots of mixtures of green, brown, gold and a bright blue sky above us! Couldn't have picked a more perfect day to go sightseeing outdoors! Caught a bit of cold wind while ascending the steeper part of the ridge, but this dropped away soon, and we had at most a small breeze for the rest of the ridge to the >>>
Store Blåmannen

I had seen Store Blåmannen from Storkjølen the week before our trip, and could not help but notice how striking this mountain was. It was therefore on my 'to-do' list next time! My friend Pernilla joined me for the tour, and we drove over to Kvaløya in the late morning because the weather had been very cloudy and a bit damp, but the forecast suggested drier and sunny weather towards the late afternoon. So we parked at the bottom of the mountain by Kaldfjord and set off shortly after midday, although it was not possible yet to see the summit! After getting above the treeline and onto the slabby rock above, the clouds began to break up and soon we got some views of the highest peaks popping out over the cloud base. The scramble was quite pleasant, and there were lots of interesting things to >>>
Hamperokken

I did this trip with some friends during the EISCAT workshop being held in Tromso. Since there was an afternoon free without any seminars or talks and the weather was forecasted to be warm and amzing all week, we were all psyched up for doing a mountain hike, especially since the three of us had climbed and summited Mont Blanc together only a few weeks earlier. Hamperokken was our destination of desire, and we managed to convince a few other workshop friends to join us too, which was also quite handy because they had a car after having driven from Sodankyla in Finland to Tromso. It was quite an unpleasant start to try and get up and out of the forest and at times too unenjoyable to want to carry on with the hike, especially since the temperature was in the 20s and there were lots of midges around >>>
